When an Author Becomes a Friend
There are authors you enjoy.
There are authors you recommend.
And then there are authors who somehow move into your life without paying rent.
For me, that author is Elin Hilderbrand.
Over the years, I have read every single Nantucket novel she has written.
Every.
Single.
One.
And if you’ve read Elin Hilderbrand, you know that’s not a small commitment. Her bibliography is longer than some people’s vacation itineraries.
Yet I kept showing up.

Characters wander from one novel into another. Familiar locations reappear. The island itself becomes a character. After enough books, you start feeling less like a reader and more like a seasonal resident who forgot to pay property taxes.
I knew the beaches.
I knew the restaurants.
I knew who might show up unexpectedly in the next chapter.
It wasn’t just reading.
It was belonging.
Which is why reading Swan Song felt different.
For years, Elin had talked about ending her Nantucket era, and when the final book arrived, I approached it with the same feeling as attending a farewell party for a friend who’s moving away.
You’re happy for them.
You understand why they’re leaving.
But you’re also wondering who gave them permission.
I read Swan Song with a strange sense of melancholy.
The story was wonderful.
The writing was wonderful.
